I live in an apartment in the desert. I tried growing stuff on my balcony but my downstairs neighbors use so much air freshner that I was worried it would make the plants inedible. Plus the stupid complex is constantly spraying the whole complex in "weed" killer which goes everywhere. I've been doing hydroponics indoors lately. Not much flavor, but it's been entertaining. I've always had some indoor plants - scented geraniums, pothos, airplane plants, aloe, and the like. Trying to grow small veggies indoors has been interesting to say the least. I see some buds on my cherry tomato plant, so we'll see how that goes.
