CBD isn't the same thing as smoking high THC marijuana. THC is arguably better than alcohol, but causes some people to lead unproductive lives. As much as no one wants to admit it, it is very much linked to schizophrenia as well. Some people handle it fine, others not so much.

Same arguments wrt alcohol destroying lives and other maladies, weed probably being the lessor of two evils. Weed has been here for many generations. Even my ex-97 year old neighbor was telling me about the Italian kids in the neighborhood selling marijuana when she was a kid ~1938. She never tried it before she was 92. Legalizing weed with age restrictions on par with alcohol works for me. People need to make their own decisions in life, if they want to stay drunk and/or stoned all the time, they are probably not going to have their best life. If they imbibe or partake moderately or infrequently to relax or socialize, the altered state of mind is very enjoyable and possibly beneficial.
I'll agree with the sentiment that "weed isn't for everyone", just like some people can't handle their alcohol and shouldn't drink. I've seen people become more productive on cannabis and completely change their lives for the better and I've seen people become lazy fucking bums on it. Like anything it can be abused and for some people it's a drug of choice.
Why do people need to lead productive lives?
