I've done the money side pointing monies to various beneficiaries so I believe that is covered but I don't have a will for actual personal property. And also this might sound kind of fucked but if a family member dies and leaves me any type of inheritance I don't even know where that would go to. What do you guys do for this? I don't have money for a lawyer to prepare all this stuff. How are those online will companies, are they worth anything?

Depends on the state, but for the most part you don't need a lawyer, you just need to cover all the bases of executor, assets, debts, disposition, etc. and then have (usually) at least three witnesses sign it with you.

Then it's a matter of depositing copies with people whom you trust.

What he said and go to the local library, too. Ask the librarian and she'll point you in the right direction. Lots of folks have to do it this way.

So I would be dispositioning my assets both tangible and intangible?

It's really up to you how and what you disposition, but anything that you do not specifically call out will either go into contention if someone claims it, or to the state if they don't.

But broadly, Yes.

I would just give my brother all my crap and he can do whatever he wants with it. he'll take my camper I'm sure without a doubt even if it does have semi high miles. The rest is trivial things like a camera and an old snowboard a surfboard that kind of stuff nothing super important.

I would love nothing more than to have nothing more than what's in my backpack but alas is not the case. I definitely don't have a lot of stuff but I probably have one U-Haul truck filled with the crap.

Sell all of your everything to the intended recipients for 2 cents before you die.

Is that what 'good' jews do?

good jew

No. I don't know. But I'm not sure there's a single way to prevent it.

Son I'd like to sell this $20 million to you for $3.50.

You just made a purchase, you inherited nothing. Pay sales tax on your $3.50, now what? Selling and buying currency at a price other than face value isn't illegal and happens constnatly. (I'm talking about physical currency, not money, not the Euro versus teh Dollar etc. you can buy a rare silver dollar for more than $1 and you can also sell it for less than $1).

As soon as you used any money over $3.50, you'd have to pay a capital gains tax on the profits.

Nobody I know has any gold except in rings and teeth. But it's an interesting idea. Kind of like selling a house for a dollar.
