This was mine: https://pic8.co/sh/S0Cmdb.jpeg

I got it the summer before senior year. When I didn’t have sports practice, I was washing dishes in a bakery and selling women’s shoes (Can I get a woah Bundy?!) I put around $500 towards it and paid my own insurance. Living in a nigger city, I remember insurance was expensive and hard to pay when sports were in season so my parents would pick up the tab for me.

It was large but not as large as the car my dad really wanted to get me. That car was a 70’s garage-kept Towncar with no miles on it. It was mint but it was so fucking huge I was scared to drive it.

My Delta 88 was a piece of shit but I had some wheels. The trunk leaked which made the car always smell like mildew. A buddy on the football team got one too and his ran so much better than mine. We would “race” in the parking lot after practice and he would smoke me every time. The a/c only blew out the bottom which was rough when it was 95 degrees outside.

I made gas money by bring home team members. I had plenty room.

The large room of the front and back seats meant lots of room for sinning with my whore girlfriend (cheated on me in college). It got to a point when I could only start it after spraying a bunch of carb cleaner.

Someone stole the spoked hubcaps. One time I almost caught it on fire because, knowing nothing about car audio installation, I hooked up an amp with the power wire partially exposed outside the car and in through the driver door. The next morning, as I’m walking in to school, a group of girls were yelling, “NAME, your car’s on fire!” From then on I had burn marks on the door, drivers seat, carpet…..

I only had it for a year. I was commuting to college and needed something more reliable but I’ll never forget that old hoopty and the feeling of freedom that came with having your own wheels.

So, what was your first car?

Dude late 70s early 80s, wasn't that the greatest time to be a teenage boy ? I had a 69 Camaro with a Vette 327 motor , an AMX with a 390 4spd , a 66 Chrysler Newport with a 383 BB , it had power seats and ac . Had a 71 Torino with a 351 Cleveland. Imsmr , the most expensive one was the AMX , 1200 bucks , lol.

It absolutely was. I often tell people I came of age in the last great time in this Country. I used to work with a bunch of millennial kids. They were talking one day about how Dazed and Confused was their favorite movie. One of the little fucks looks at me and says, You're about a hundred years old. Did you live then and was any of that shit true. I mused a second and said, well not exactly. Little punk got all smug and shit and said I knew it. I came back with, Yeah we didn't have a Top Notch so we hung at a place called Art Johnson's or Mikey D's and we didnt have a moon tower so we did our keggers in places like Cemeteries and shit like that. Otherwise the movies is pretty accurate for MY life anyway. Kid just stood there and one of his buddies said, see? I told you. I knew that shit was for real. I said, yeah fellas, being a HUNDRED years old does carry its advantages! As much as I'm still a Bow Tie guy I would've killed for a 68 or 69 AMX. I STILL love those cars

That AMX was a blast , 390 4spd , a real screamer.

That was one performance car I always thought never should have had an automatic. ALL those AMX's SHOULD have been 4 speeds. You were fortunate to have one!
