I just started working out two months ago, One of my calluses got torn off while deadlifting only 175 pounds. Do any of you lift with gloves? Lifting without them is painful each time because my skin gets pinched and its kinda bothersome since i am not even lifting that much weight.

Yes, yes belt but also proper form. However when you're lifting weight you know you can lift, is your current working weight then work yourself off the belt. When you've hit your goal set + rep amount for that weight and are ready to move up weight then absolutely use a belt, but like I stated start to use it less until you don't need it.

I have to use wrist straps, and now an elbow brace. I dont like the way it makes my joints and ligiments feel when I dont use them.

You have to keep some muscle tension to hold the weights otherwise you are just putting all the tension on your joints and ligaments.

Only people ive seen use gloves were elderly boomers that weighed either 75lbs or 300lbs

Glad to see you took the first step and started to better your physical health, mate. I don't use gloves other than for weighted pull ups, but I care for my calluses when needed. When they start to get too big, take a razor blade to them or a pumice stone. Others choose to bite them off or hit them with fingernail clippers.

The reason your callus tore is due to moisture, and the bar rotated in your grip which ripped the top. If you have the option to use chalk/liquid chalk, I would go with that first bc grip strength is more useful and translates to other lifts. Some people at lower weights like to leave the bar in the crook of the last knuckle, or Also an alternating switch grip may help as well.

Wrist straps are a necessity, just have to find ones you like. There are ones with pads across the palm which is similar to gloves, regular straps, the figure 8 looped ones that put all the pressure on your wrists & forearms so will lose grip strength there as you learn to cheat, and ones with thumb loops. The ones you posted in the link will work, but I don't care for them bc I deadlift 3-5 plates for reps without much break in between sets. I just don't like having to reset my straps every set. If you're new to lifting, 3-5 plates means for each side.

As far as a belt, I have never used one even when squatting 575 lbs. I think it's more important to work on your form at a lower weight so as you progress and lift heavier, your mind muscle connection will remember where all your body parts are supposed to be. Use the mirrors for this or film yourself to check your form. If you're a powershitter or on some starting strength/get fat workout, then I suggest a belt bc the progress in that is mostly gotten from gaining fat at a ridiculous speed just to lift heavier.

When I do labor work or things of that nature I always use gloves but for the gym and my goals, I think having better grip strength is superior. If you're going off what other people in your gym do, stop. The best thing to compare yourself to is who you were yesterday. If gloves help you be better than who you were yesterday, than fuck every one else.

Thank you for the detailed post. Not OP, but I'm in a similar situation to him. I'm more trying to figure out how the hell to increase my grip strength because my grip is failing on deadlifts instead. Any advice for someone who's a complete newbie to lifting and the gym, only been doing it about a month, and while I've progressed from where I started, still woeful (Doesn't help that I'm not a man and also a shorty to boot, haha)?

Every height has good attributes that can be taken advantage of so don't let sway you into thinking you're less well off. I'm 6'3" and the mechanics & levers are workable but are harder to understand the exact science of why I can't isolate glutes or hammies as well as a shorty can. I lift with many manlets and feel they have an advantage over me while deadlifting.

I know a lot of people like to use the "captains of crunch" springs for grip strength, but it is illogical to buy one and keep progressing and have to buy more over time. Grip is something that can easily be worked while at home while reading or watching a movie. I do burn outs while pinching a plate https://pic8.co/sh/FtRVmw.jpg between my fingers and thumbs. Start with heaviest plate you can handle for as long as possible and drop to a smaller plate and repeat. These could be done at the gym but are time consuming if you can hold them for a while. Walking while pinching plates will help with minor oblique work as well. Especially if you only use one hand at a time.

The one I use most for grip is also the best forearm workout. Arnold used it a lot. https://pic8.co/sh/hhCOuR.jpg The important part of this which cannot be seen in the photo, is to roll the bar all the way down to inside of your last knuckle (finger rolls iirc). Roll it back up into your palm and then lift it and hold at top. I prefer lighter weight for sets of 100 because that's what works for me. You have to always keep in mind that what works well for others might not work well for you.

If grip is failing specifically during deads, I also suggest hitting your deads at the beginning of your workout. I've adjusted to use deads and overhead press as my warmup 5x a week bc they are total body, but depending what rest of your workout will be, learn to adjust the weight accordingly so you have room in the tank to handle your other pushes or pulls.

Before I leave any gym, I do deadhangs to help with back tension and also for grip strength. If you already have pull ups in your routine, towel pull ups or towel deadhangs are great for grip too.

Once you progress a bit and discover what works well, you may want to move onto fat gripz. These may be something you'll have to try at the store to see what size you need and they can be purchased cheaper online. They are basically a hard pool noodle that can be wrapped around a bar/dumb bell.

Apologies if that was too long. Not too much I get excited about nowadays other than cats and newbs asking for lifting advice. I would like to see a lifting/fitness subverse here one day. Many probably wouldn't care about what I have to say bc I'm not natty, but roids/gear is not magic. I still have to lift hard and put in the work to get where I want to be. I simply recover much faster and can train 4 hours a day without getting tired.

I'm mostly just doing compound lifts and working on trying to get an unassisted pullup in time (I'm not even close right now, probably able to lift about half my bodyweight for sets of 8-10). Mostly trying to get technique right, though I am lifting enough weight that its physically taxing for me by the end of my sets.

Yes gloves. I can't even fathom why people are telling you no. That is just silly. Get some good gloves with wrist straps for support. It will make your life better. You'll have a better grip, no blisters or calluses. You will lift more weight with less chance of injury.

And don't forget to take your protein, within an hour after your workout and the next morning for sure.

Gloves won't allow you to lift more or prevent injury, not sure where you got that.

I got it from being a very experienced weight lifter. Gloves give you a better grip. This better grip allows you to grasp the bar better and lift more weight. It also helps to prevent bar roll and loss of grip that could cause injury. My gloves also have a wrist strap that locks my wrist into place and also helps prevent injury. Lifting with gloves makes weight lifting easier which means you lift more and heavier.

No. Rare exceptions for injuries, even small exist. Certain lifts, deadlift, straps are fine and only cause a change in the rotation of the bar and provide nothing in terms of weight (obviously).

Look it up if interested, DL straps.

e; Not phoneposting anymore so I can explain. Think about Deadlift and how the bar is held. Both hands overhand grop (knuckled pointing away from body, forward), with the fingers wrapped around the bar. What this does is cause the bar to follow the path of least resistance which will cause the bar to rotate backward, toward the body, the legs. How deadlift wraps solve this is by having the anchor strap that wraps around the bar wrap in the opposite direction. This causes the bar to rotate forward, away from the body where to get out of the finger grip it rotates backward. These two rotational forces cancel each other out completely meaning the only force the grip experiences is the vertical pull of gravity. That's easy to hold rather than the rotation moving down the fingers and away from the hand.

Work a lot with my hands. Always wear gloves, especially when lifting things. Need the right gloves for the job. Have several pairs, leather, waterproof, padded, rubber, etc. Ask your gym bros what they recommend for what your workout is. Good luck, gym bro. May the gains gods bless you

I always did when I lifted with free weights. now I use PT bands so I don't need to.

i use gloves, they make lifting more comfortable. and wife loves my smooth hands and fit body at the same time.
