One of my favorite films is Italian. It tells the story of the crew of an Italian military ship that gets stranded off the shore of a Greek island near the end of WW2. Their radio equipment is broken and they are forced to explore the island. Eventually it is discovered that all the fighting age Greek men of the island were conscripted into the war, leaving only the young, the elderly and women. The Italian soldiers have different personalities and a lot of the movie is about the ways they react to their situation, with a focus on the cultural differences between Italians and Greeks at the time. Eventually they are greeted by a Muslim who arrives in a small rowboat, and he offers the group the chance to try opium, which eventually they all do. After the Italians pass out, he steals their weapons and escapes, leaving the Italians no choice but to settle on the island and much time passes.
One day they are having a footbal match when an Italian aircraft lands on the field. The pilot informs them the war has been over for several years and they have to decide whether to stay or go home.
It sounds a bit serious, but it is mostly a comedy. The acting is great and it has a wonderful sound track. Probably the only foreign film I've watched several times and would probably watch it again as well.
