They mistook possessing greater technology knowledge for somehow being untouchable. The governments, corporations, cartels, and secret societies, who finance the development of our technology, took up arms against Anonymous quickly dispelling them of that delusion. If you go to war against someone, don't pretend to be surprised when they actually mobilize against you.
