Just how densely packed do you think asteroid belts really are? Are you using the (((hollyweird))) sci-fi space movie depictions as your basis for just how much stuff there is in an asteroid belt? Much like the satellites orbiting Earth, there is an incredible amount of space between significantly sized objects in the belt. Even in planetary ring systems there are huge swaths of emptiness between the significant chunks of ring material. It's not jam packed with rocks. It's safe to traverse the belts because there's just not that much in the way.
Not 100% sure what you mean, but if your referring to sending craft to the outer solar system, it has to do with deltaV savings. The path of least resistance when launching craft is to launch in such a way that you take advantage of the orbit of a body. Not just on earth but also in the solar system at large. Leaving the sun's plane of orbit requires major deltaV or oberth effect flyby magic. It's much easier to just follow the herd, unless you're approaching an object with a badly eccentric orbit like Pluto or Eris. Hence: through the asteroid belt
Are you talking about gravitational slingshotting?
Trying to make it simple for the OP but yes
That's a perfectly rational interpretation of the words I posted :)
I had just seen a fresh sci-fi video, where a crew had to navigate through an asteroid field, facing impossible odds. Reminded me of all the times I had seen that very same shituation before, in the same context.
The real asteroid belt is not nearly as tightly packed as what people think. Out of the numerous probes we've sent past Mars since the beginning of the space program, not a single one has been damaged in any way by an impact flying through that section of space. In fact, when the Dawn probe went to Vesta and Ceres, the transit time between the two bodies was MONTHS of flying through said belt, with no damage to any part of the Dawn probe. It really is a boring section of space that you almost have to intentionally try to fly into something,
Thank you
Are you vaccinated? I hope not, because future humanity needs your kind of intellect. If not, well... we're fucked. But you knew that already, didn't you? You have that great sense of kill humor.
Because empty space is black, and I hate niggers. Now please return to your seat, sir.
We all orbit our sun which is named Sol, thus Solar system. Sometimes the orbits of smaller things cross larger things.
Do we, really? When do we fly through asteroid belts? Because I'm unfamiliar with us having done that in my lifetime at least.
Dude! What happened? :) Talk to us! We just might love you.
Do a barrel roll!
