you can do everything a VPN can do just by renting a server and installing some software, which is more secure and you wont have to worry about anyone selling your data. Its not hard, just rent some server space or buy your own server and get online and watch videos on how to set one up. Its pretty easy to be honest.

No, you can't. You lose so many things, including geo flexibility and the most impotant reason to use a VPN - security through obscurity, having all of your traffic aggregated with others in a natural de facto poison the well. Hosting your own server doesn't hide your searches and browsing, it just masks the origin IP. Pure script kiddie nonsense.
You aren't qualified to be giving advice, you don't even understand and comprehend the purpose of a VPN saying stupid shit like this.
It is pretty easy to set up one, but you lose the ability to get around your country's restrictions on content or make it look like you you live somewhere else when doing whatever online.
And renting space at AWS or Azure is simple, but they'll definitely give up your info for anyone that asks. Most VPN services will also, but some at least claim to respect privacy.
You can rent server space in different countries for cheap too, so if you own your own server, rent a server half way across the glob and then set that server up, then do the same for what ever country you want. I understand whatcha saying, but understand that if you are in control of the servers you rent its about is good at its going to get unless you some how manage to set up your own ISP, which in its self is a whole nother conversation.
Trash advice. All you'd be doing is adding a single hop for glowies to trace. There's no obfuscation by shared IP, there's not destination choices etc.
