Did a lot of flying with my friend 10-15 years ago when he got his pilots license. I would go up with him and we'd putz around landing at various airports or flying to places that had lunch available. My favorite flight is looping around manhattan.
You are right about the smell. We had access to a 172 and 182 and the 182 just smelled like an old bowling alley. I think it was an older model, like 1980 or so.

yes, i am familiar with that smell.. just tickles the back of your nose and makes you wonder where the homeless guy is hiding.
