I'm am looking at switching my home/auto insurance to allstate from progressive as I recently received quotes for considerably less than what I'm currently paying for what appears to be comparable insurance. There must be a catch that I'm missing though. The home insurance premium is about 30% less.

Show Progressive your quote. Insurance companies are great at raising your rates for no apparent reason. They might match it. If not, leave. Then you get to play the game with All-State.

My neighbor had them, and when we had a bad hail storm they only replaced half his roof. Everyone else in the neighborhood got full roofs replaced. Look into that before buying.

This is my primary concern. I tried to dig up some negative feedback about them, but I mostly on found ads and other bullshit.

Probably best to look at the policy

  1. They like apathy. Those who shop get better deals.

  2. Not all insurance agencies are equal. While they are pretty heavily regulated, there is enough wiggle room to screw you over. Look at insurance ratings. Top two are always Amica or Hartford. They are not the cheapest, but IMHO they are so much better than allstate/statefarm/progressive/etc.

A few years ago, we had a major storm in our neighborhood. Most of the houses needed new roofs and new windows / siding / paint.

My insurance gave me a check for $95K. My neighbors with the 'lowest cost' insurance got checks <$5K. They got told "Nah, your roof isn't bad." "Nah, your siding was already damaged." Lots of BS.

It was really eye opening as to how bad allstate/statefarm/etc are. Crooks.
