I disagree but with the caveat that his notoriety has been inflated recently because he was a fag. It's not correct to say no one would have heard of him. His work gained widespread academic prominence in the 1950s while he was being chemically castrated for being a fag. He actually did become well known when people still hated fags, so it can't be true that being a fag made him famous.
Subversive politics was always in play and it strangely played out over time. I'm not saying this happened, but his work may well have been picked specifically because he was the Rosa Parks of fags.
That said, his acclaim may well be rightly earned. While there are some who will shit on the notion, there are Jewish scientists who have actually done things too.

Sure. Church. Babbage, Von Neumann. Knuth, McCarthy, Dijkstra, Peano, Hilbert, Goedel. Lots more. Many people have contributed directly or indirectly to computer science, which is just math. There are so many more. It's hard to even figure out who made greater advances. Turing's thesis was so similar to Church's computability conjecture they call it the Church-Turing thesis. Turing connected math to a possibly physical machine in a neat way. In 1936 it would have been hard to imagine a machine directly executing lambda calculus.
I dont recognize any of these names. I think that kinda proves OP's point.
