I'd probably make a general tinkerer/Maker/technical creative type sub to cover a lot of different disciplines and interests. Are there any subs like this already outside of the DIY sub? This never took off on Voat but Poal seems more like a community that can make it work so I'd like to give it a go here.

It'd be interesting to see something similar to 4chan's /g/ board here on Poal, but only with more productive discussion. I also run which is tech-related.

Thanks for the link to FreeTech. I'm subbed!

No problem, and thanks for subbing!

Also subbed (actually a few days ago). Great sub and content.

Checkout 'View All Subs' in the main sidebar. There are several subs that may interest you ... if not, make one, but we do have such things.

I primarily repair old analog electronics ( ) but haven't built anything of my own; does old computer refurbs

[–] 4 pts

Analog is the best kind of log. Although log log rolls down stairs and over your neighbors dog.

[–] 3 pts

Log is even better than powdered toast, man.

[–] 2 pts

It really is the end all toy/tool. Once you have log there is no going back. Also what kind of electronics projects do you like to do?

[–] 0 pt

It's better than bad, it's GOOD!

[–] 3 pts

Woohoo analog! I like analog electronics repair. That smell of vintage equipment is intoxicating. It's also probably a health hazard but it's intoxicating nonetheless. I subbed to and will check out the amateur radio sub too. I never went Ham but it always interested me. Thanks for the links and info.

That smell is leaded solder fyi. So sweet and tasty.

[–] 1 pt

Good old 60/40 lead tin alloy with rosin core flux. I hate that new RoHS crap solder that doesn't stick well even if you add more flux. I keep spools of the good stuff around to fix the inevitable cracked and cold solder joints that the RoHS stuff causes. There's nothing quite like the smell of lead and rosin in the morning.

I will have to preface this by saying that I am not any of the above.

But I am a small portion of a group of real life people who are interested in the same sort of shit.

I would highly encourage you to make a sub like this.

Regards,

-Theo

Wow Theo! I didn't know you were interested in this sort of stuff. On Voat your posts never gave me the indication that you had this interest. I guess this goes to show that Voat was not the place for "Real Builders" to flourish. Glad you and I are here now and we can start being constructive instead of just shitposting.

This could get me back into it. I have made a few projects with Pi's and Arduino boards. I was really into it for a while. I'm a programmer by trade, so that's my strength. The electronics part of it more of a weak spot but with the power of the internet I was always able to achieve my designs.

Ghost Computing - Ghost Computers - Ghost Technology (like ghost guns if you were to use logic there for the most part.)

3D printed ghost computers.

  1. No physical / digital trace it was ever bought at a store.
  2. No physical / digital trace it was ever bought online.

Can't trace back through receipt / can't trace back through digital means / can't trace back through any other physical means.

For now I like to explore the theory of "Ghost Computing" and/or "Ghost Computers".

I want to 3D print a custom mother board at some point using a very specific plastic for 3D printers that's used for tech / technology (I forget for now) and try to do everything from scratch that way. It's a bit complicated for one person though to do and a bit outside my realm of knowledge / understanding, but I do explore it for now and go into theory to help my mind better understand it. So you never know.

Theory of Ghost Computing - overall

Theory of Ghost Computing - short term use Vs. long term use / usage

Theory of Ghost Computing - costs / disposable / price points and other stuff

Theory of Ghost Computing - laws / rights (rights are often laws to though)

Theory of Ghost Computing - hidden in the home and such to keep it safe from intruders - but this IDK yet. Monitors home in secret or tracks movement in the home when gone or sleeping and such. Customized into the home maybe to be hidden. Plus most criminals don't know how to look for a customized security setup when robbing it and such or wouldn't know at all for that matter since it's never before seen or don't have knowledge there to say the least for now.

Theory of Ghost Computing - Ghost Networks / Ghost Networking - Ghost(Nets) - not to be confused with the other GhostNet stuff online. This is all new in 2019 (from my personal standpoint that is) nothing to do with the past.

Theory of Ghost Computing - anything I forgot and/or can't think of for now. Need caffeine waking up currently so can't think 100% yet.

Theory of Ghost Computers - just how to build one or a ghost computer to start.

Custom 3D printed computers and such. I want to do it now, but I'm hesistant on money if not other things alone for now at least.

Thinking about it for now. Not sure where to go. Maybe Electronics Enthusiast to hacker type stuff. General tinkerer to as well if not other areas. As long as the name isn't terrible I'd probably check it out to say the least for now.

I made , feel free to contribute.

[–] 1 pt

Subbed! Will give it a go and see what I can contribute. Thanks!

[–] 2 pts

Please do, I'm more a mechanical type than electronics.

[–] 0 pt

More mechanical minded you say? Well this YouTube channel may interest you. It has over 1700 video animations of different mechanical linkages and mechanisms in motion. I love linkages too so this channel is pure gold to me.

Thanks for pointing out this sub! I prefer fixing things myself over paying for repairs in a lot of cases.

I haven't got those skills but I have an idea for a name for your sub you should just make yourself. It's old but it is descriptive, how about hack the planet. All that stuff a real hacker with great skills would have. I think it would be popular and I'd visit to learn stuff. Always fun learning new stuff to make me a more rounded person.

[–] 1 pt

If you make it, give it a shout out on . I bet a lot of people would find that interesting.

I fall into a couple of those categories, and yeah - I think this is a good idea.

I own a small computer shop in a rural area. I'll be happy to learn from your skills. Most of the PCs I work on are hardware issues these days. SSD's replacing old tired hard drives and such.

[–] 1 pt

I'd be glad to help you beef up your skills. I spent some of my early career years doing PC and equipment repairs in the field. A lot of my PC repair knowledge is now ancient, but I still build PCs from time to time and do unit and component level repairs as required. I'm in software these days as that makes me better money but I will always be in the hardware as often as I can. Looks like Poal might just be a great place to get this tech and tinkering movement going.
