You can't avoid using race to define humans, unless you want to use the common definition which includes all extant races.
Scientists usually define clades (groups of related species) using one of two formulas:
1) Everything descended from the most recent common ancestor of X and Y
2) Everything more related to X than to Y
Choose one of those two formulas and then plug in X and Y to generate definition. For example you could say that a human is everything descended from the most recent common ancestor of homo sapiens and homo erectus. That's a very broad definition. You could say that a human is everything more related to Whites than to niggers. That is a pretty narrow definition.
