Depends on what they're made of. I've never seen an aluminum or concrete kayak, only canoes, but I've seen plenty of canoes and kayaks made out of plastic (ABS and PVC), fiberglass, kevlar, canvas, wood, and carbon fiber.

Old school aluminum canoes are pretty cool. You could bounce those off rocks and they'd hold strong.
