Backpacks are fine if they fit under the seat in front of you. They are just going to charge you if you have to use an overhead space.
So hiking backpacks are a no-go, but a standard "book bag" backpacks are fine. (It's been a couple years since I've traveled with them ... don't believe the rules have changed, but yeah...)
Spirit is prefer for short travel. If I'm going someplace for 1-2 nights, I can throw my change of clothes and toothbrush into my backpack.
edit: rules look to be the same: https://www.sendmybag.com/airlines/spirit-baggage-allowance
My normal backpack is not much larger than my wife's purse ... so it's fine as a 'personal item'. It's large enough for my laptop, chargers, headphones, toothbrush/etc, and a change of cloths. All I need for a short trip.
Good to know. My backpack can fit under the seat if half filled. I'm going for 7 days so I'll being wearing the same shit almost every day.
I used spirit 2 weeks ago and on a full flight many people put their backpack up in the overhead bin so I did too and there was a lot of space not used up in the bins and no one was saying not to use them for personal items
Good to know. My Father's an asshole for moving to such a shitty place in Florida that has crappy flights. If I was in New York it'd be great, I could get directs all day long for like $35 but I live out west and It's tricky. And I got to fly with a bunch of niggers and spics which I'm not really wanting to do at all.
