I used to sit like the Japs do, with hands on thighs , eyes closed , and just focus on my breath entering and leaving , it did seem to help me become more centered and less anxious / DefCon5

No. re take your mind completely 'out of this world', no. I have to remain in control and can't let my mind go. Same control desire prevents me from getting drunk.
I strive to do it every waking second. In that i see meditation as a state of peace within, where we turn our busy brain into a silent space of rleaxation, but also, intense focus.
You can meditate anywere, ever done the dishes, and just feel yourself float? Daydreaming, its all meditative states.
Try living in your heartspace, and you will be amazed at how calm you can be, and still extremely focused. Its fun!
