Fun fact, when area codes were being assigned they did so by perceived importance of the city. The lower the number, i.e. the less time you spent dialing, the more important the city.

L.A. was just one number less important that NYC, which was perceived to be the most important at 212. Nova Scotia, Canada was seen as the least important at 902 (9+10+2, 0 being 10 spaces on the dial.)

Alaska and Hawaii didn't have any, not being states yet.
