I’m talking 5/4 - 12/4 stuff for furniture. I have a local guy who can get me stuff and his prices are exorbitant, I think.

Maple, Tiger, sipo, ipe, walnut. Stuff like that. Anyone use advantage lumber?

Your mother never has problems finding hardwood when she visits me.

I knew there had to be atleast one such comment. It is the way.

It hadn't happened yet when I got here. It's a law of thermodynamics I'm pretty sure.

Are you OK? She is both dead and rather vengeful. Great cook though. And pretty handy.

Bro. Be careful. You might have a situation, there.

The trouble is not getting hardwood. The trouble is finding hardwood that has been properly seasoned and cured. That's generally expensive stuff. About ten years ago I had to install a threshold on my front door -- the old one had rotted away. I needed one board, about 2X8 inches wide and about four feet long. I found a piece of oak that would do the job (a threshold has to be hardwood), and it cost me over $75. For one stick of wood, ten years ago. I hate to even think what it costs today. Twice as much, probably.

I had the same issue and the only way I got around that level of pricing was to soak the board I got at Home Depot in Thompsons Water Seal for a couple of days (after sanding, etc). I had to predrill holes to make sure no rotting occurred after I nailed it in. And then covering the nails with wood filler and sealing again and then painting with water proof paint.

Not necessarily. Keep in mind, that building is slowing down. People aren't buying much anymore.

I use a local guy…his prices are crazy, but the store has lots of very good pieces. I figure if I don’t support it, the last of the lumber shops carrying the “exotics” will whither and die.

If you have any Amish nearby, that's the way to go. Try their homemade ice cream while you're there.

I do, and I love this idea.

Super friendly people in my experience. They only operate during daylight hours for obvious reasons.

You’re not gonna find it cheap unless you re-purpose it from Goodwill furniture or an old barn or something like that. Hardwood, especially planks, is priced very high.

If you have a woodcraft nearby, sometimes they aren't robbery on the lumber. Otherwise, you just have to find your local good hardwood supplier, and yeah, shit is expensive. It's like whiskey -- if it's good, it's because they have been seasoning it for a couple of years.

Pay out the ass at local hardware. Get the shitty stuff at big box stores. Find local dude with hardwood trees offer to take down for them. Then cute it with furnace place. Mill. Or reclaim and clean it up. Shits expensive. Maybe practice with pine and try popular woods.

Usually first thing in the morning...

A stiff long log of hardwood usually satisfies any carpenter, faggot or woman.
