Nah man, you're right. When you're a kid you see adults as some kinda authority figure but then you grow up and realize it's all just bs and no one has any idea what they're doing most the time.

I used to read books like that when I was a teenager. Now I realize that someone who put a book together isn't really that different than me, and actually, I could do it. The book might not sell very much, but I could be the one putting the print on the pages.

I'm 40 and I look back at the decisions I made when I was 30, and I see how little I knew. If I knew then what I know now I would have made four times as much progress in business & life in the last 10 years.

However, when I was 30, I remember looking back at when I was 20 and thinking the same thing. And it wasn't untrue then either.

This makes me wonder what I will think when I am 50. I feel confident at the moment that I am doing well, but am I going to look back at what I am doing right now, and shake my head at how much time I am wasting?

Imagine you are a young masai boy. Living in the dessert in Africa. In order to be a man, with all that entails, you have to kill a lion, with your spear. You wanna be a boy forever? Then go get your spear, Jd kill a fuckin lion. Obviously there's a few steps between being a young boyand killing a lion with a spear, but the point is the ritual. Imagine knowing you accomplished that, and everyone knows and respects it.

I always thought tribal societies had it right was having rituals for boys to become men , and be recognized as such. Same for girls becoming women.

I had the same thoughts as you. The only differences between a kid and an adult in my experience are

1) more experience that you end up using on a daily basis.
What this means is that you are more likely to do something different or not, because you realize more consequences 2) You are less likely to think you're immortal 3) You have responsibilities. If you don't work or whatever, you don't eat, or you lose your car or house or whatever

But, yeah, as a kid i thought that "becoming an adult" was a thing, but it's not... It's only a thing in tribes where they have some ceremony.

Same, it's endemic to the sixties and seventies kids, youth was so idolized, and we were given the impression we'd never get old.

Like we were on the precipice of greatness. Fed to us thru radio and TV and all them rock concerts.

They do read rather like a phone book, but they are incredibly eye-opening.
