If I am buying silver coins for the ounce of silver, why would I buy coins from the US mint at $70/oz versus an online seller like golden state mint for $26/oz? Is there some pedigree these might have when SHTF?

Agreed. Why pay a premium for the picture on a one ounce bar? If you are a SHTF investor, keep in mind that larger bars will be hard to use unless bartering for something big. Three precious metals: gold, silver and lead. I've bought from dealers at gunshows.

And your safe ideally would have the capacity for storage; a seperate safe is good as well.
