The world is not better than it was 1000 years ago. But it is a common understanding seeded through propaganda.
People are deeply flawed and destructive. Even the best people. Some of the worst things are done by good people desiring to do good. Power is not good without understanding. Without being all knowing, it is corrupt by its very nature.
It is propaganda that has made you pessimistic. Just look at child mortality figures. Try to go 1 month without a cell phone or internet and realize how much it benefits your every day life. Automation has the potential to free us from work. Computers allow us to get tens of thousands of times more work done than before. Just with simple things like accounting, education, design, communication. That you lack the, whatever it is that has stopped you, from using technology effectively does not mean that potential is not there. Others are using it it start multi million dollar businesses from home at the age of 16, organizing their communities, promoting their fairs and garage sales, and all manner of social gatherings.
Everyone can now access information about fixing anything that broke, building anything they want, improving their home, growing better crops and gardens. Everyone is now an expert in everything.
