I'm skeptical of a state that doesn't even allow drivers to pump their own gas.

New Jersey is a lot like the old Jersey off the north coast of France. It has an English feel to it. The people who settled there are exceedingly polite. Working with them you'll find they're nearly as strict as Germans albeit less competent. Newark is the center of social and public life, and it's a beautiful city. But it's been a while since I've visited. I trust it's the same. Those brits run a tight ship.

Thought it was more Italian, with too many darkies in the cities

Their toll road is pretty nice. Lots of fireflies at rest stops. I'm saying this as someone who has only driven through the state, but my experience with it has been pretty good.

I have Pennsylvania bias, but I loved the shore as a kid. Haven't been to the beach in a while. Crossing from NYC to Jersey smells terrible. Their laws are pretty fucked though
