Custody %? Pursue child support? US counties have child support divisions that will pursue for free.

Start attending local church. There is lots of help to be had, there.
Probably won't get anything from the mother if she's a big enough POS that the courts awarded HIM custody.

Are his parents nearby and stable? Maybe they can watch the kids while he's at work. At least a few days a week till he figures something else out.

Yes, she’s a nightmare and no factor. No parents. We’re all sort of pooling time as a neighborhood so he can get shit done when he needs to.
