I think you are correct. My father built two houses, by hand. He held a regular day job, then came home and worked on the houses for four or five hours. My uncle held two regular jobs. He was a machinest, and at night he installed heating systems. He also built his own house, by hand. He worked seven days a week, all day long, then worked into the night. And when I say they built their houses, I don't mean they told a contractor what to do, I mean they cut the studs and nailed on the sheetrock. They ran the wiring and did the plumbing. They installed the windows and and the rafters for the roof. They did almost *everything* themselves, by hand, with hand tools. Maybe there are men today who could do this kind of work, day after day, month after month, but I doubt there are very many of them.
