You are going to need to sue them. Seriously, talk to an employment attorney. You should be able to get a 30 min consultation for free.
Job abandonment is something that can come back to haunt you. You won't be able to put this employer on your resume, and that leaves you with a gap that will be difficult to explain. When a future employer call them to verify your past employment, they will legally be able to say "We would not rehire this employee."
Job abandonment occurs when an employee does not report to work as scheduled and has no intention of returning to the job but does not notify the employer of his or her intention to quit.
It's not about money, it's about protecting your future employability.
But the thing is i did try to work with them, but they made the process so convoluted i gave up
I understand. That's why you need to sue them. If you don't, you're going to be branded a job abandoner for the rest of your career. Please at least get a free 30 min consultation with an employment attorney. Call one up. They will invite you to their office to sit across from their desk and tell you if you have a case or not.
I did it before, it took ~20 min, they said I didn't have a case, and I went home. Didn't cost me a cent!
