That is like saying I want a dog but don't want to take care if it. Come on Man. You can't recreationally own a dog, it takes commitment, time and money. It takes love, pets, brushing, grooming, shots, walks, a leash, dog bowl, coat and bed .......... now multiply that times 10.

If you didn't grow up with horses, then you are going to get hurt. Just like dogs, you have to research what breed is the best fit. And you need tack to ride...... bit, bridle, saddle, blanket, halter, lead rope.

Second, if you are serious, find a vet. It does no good to have a large animal if there is no vet to help with care, because if there is a wire to get tangled up in, a hill to fall down on or a hole to break a leg, they will find it, guaranteed.

Third, find a farrier, it will need trims and shoes.

Fourth, they need shelter (barn) and food. Not so much in the summer, but most definitely in the winter. They also need fresh water. Do you have a pond or stream? If not, you will have to supply the container and keep it clean and full. There is nothing worse than trying to break up a frozen tub in the middle of winter.

Is your property fenced? It needs to be horse high and in good condition. If they can get out, they will. Trying to find a horse in a rural area is a nightmare. They are stealthy at hiding.

Owning a horse can be very rewarding and if you have a piece of property, that is a great start. The more time you put into training, the safer you will be. The tighter the bond with your steed, the greater the asset will become. The greater your understanding of how these animals think and act, the better person you will become. It is a commitment not to be taken lightly. They are awesome animals and could save your life in many situations. You can also be killed.

If you are truly serious, look for a quarter horse with a good disposition. They will have muscled bodies with a wide chest and powerful round hindquarters that can maneuver mountain trails. Since they are athletic, they will ride you all day without complaint. They are calm, dependable and loyal.

Learn all you can about them, then purchase one in the spring.
