I used to live in NYC. Car alarms are a waste. No one hears them and comes running anymore. If you're lucky enough to hear your own and get out there in time to stop the theft, you're faced with a different set of issues.
I used to make sure not to leave valuables in my car. I also had an ignition shutoff switch instead of an alarm. They could break in but not take the car.
About 10 or so years ago I worked at an office where the parking lot was up against a homeless encampment the cops didn't care about. Everyone left the cars unlocked. Bastards would smash out windows if they saw a fucking penny on the floor. The fuckers would just open car doors and root around for shit. They would always flip off the cameras when they walked by.
Back in the day you'd see stickers on car windows like 'No Stereo Inside" or "No Valuables Inside." Benzie Boxes were a thing, too.
Ive read people smash the windows on these marked cars out of spite.
Yes, seems criminals have more rights these days. Maybe the ignition cutoff but I'm not so much worried about it being taken as dealing with the hassle of repairing it.
