it really depends on what kind of "impulse" you wish to lower
the basic idea is that a wave, when it hits a metal plate, will generate currents that will then "emit again" if they are not "short circuited.
so, a metal box, with all the sides in pretty good contact gets you close to a shield
the "more conductive" the metal, the faster the currents short circuit ....

ist it your apartment ? meaning, can you do some serious carpenter work ?
the best feasible thing is to "shield" a room, but even that is all to be seen how effective it is
if you are trying to protect from EMP (atomic, russian) .... forget it
