I'm working on one right now and my research comes up with this vague answer..

Salaries should be reasonable.

With that said, transparency is extremely important to your success. You need to build and maintain a high level of trust with your donors. Nothing will kill your non-profit faster than when your donors see (their) money being allocated inappropriately.

Get a good accountant..

How much is to much to make when working for non profit?

Depends on where they operate and live. If they are genuine and operating somewhere like Los Angeles or San Francisco it wouldn't be wrong for them to be paying $100k to employees and $200k to executives (assuming it's a fairly large organization with real bookkeeping and management needs). If they're operating in the middle of a swamp in Louisiana that would be outrageous pay.

$100k in California metro areas is about equivalent to:

  • $62,500 in Austin
  • $28,500 in Lexington, KY
  • $39,000 in Orlando, FL
  • $48,000 in Boise, ID
  • $24,500 in Bangor, ME
