I have an account on mastodon.social, but I’ve hardly used it. Mastodon is as good as the people running your Mastodon instance. One Mastodon instance could be a censored wasteland like most of social media while another could be open and free. It’s what you call a federated protocol. You can talk between instances, but each instance has control of its own domain.
