I'm at the point where anything in the "news" seems suspect. The demoralization continues. No masks? We'll take your gas/diesel away.

I'm thinking damn near everything negative that happens is intended. Except falling off the porch a little while ago. I didn't intend that.

Pretty easy to answer this one: * Stricter emissions rules for refineries * Cut off domestic and intracontinental crude supplies * Rapid dollar devaluation * Demotivate workforce

Nah. Totally organic.

Even a manufactured shortage would be a real shortage to the consumer.

This shortage was manufactured through the actions of the Biden administration.

It was a play on a word. The lack of production of diesel is intentional. The US is shuttering refineries instead of producing more gas and diesel.

Manufactured.

Diesel is simply an element of the refining process of a barrel of oil. Your get x amount of jet fuel, x amount of gas, x amount of diesel, etc. It's not going to change much. Diesel is of the LESSER QUALITY of the refining, and one of the reasons it used to cost FAR LESS than gas. It is TAXATION that drives the cost so high today, and you pay it in higher prices for products you buy, as those items were delivered via a Diesel engine.

They want to manufacture chaos to justify in your mind worse things to come.

Down voted…has a lot of factual errors.

I worked as a chemical engineer in refineries. There are a lot of processes that will change the yields you get out of a barrel of oil. The margins on diesel are much bigger than gasoline….they are making all the diesel they can.

Why a shortage? Here’s why:

Beginning of heating season. Plus nobody in the west is buying Russian oil. Plus reduced American output due to Joe Xiden. Plus OPEC production cuts just announced.

Diesel is a fuel to the common reader, it's written on the fuel pumps, we're not writing text books here.

Wasn't there something about additives too? I think I remembered reading something about that.

I don’t know. Popular additives that refiners use to meet diesel specs include lubricity, conductivity, pour point/cloud point, and off-road dye. If these additives are in short supply, that could cause diesel shortages.

diesel is an engine style, not a fuel. You can run a diesel engine on most anything viscous and combustible, including corn oil, gas mixed with waste oil, etc.
Dont worry, most mechanical engineers do not know this (because they arent taught it)

I’ll tell you what this chemical engineer knows…when you ruin the fuel system in a modern Diesel engine, it’s going to cost several thousand dollars in parts and labor to fix. And running that shit instead of DIESEL FUEL (yes, diesel is also a fuel) will ruin your fuel system.

Nope. there are diesel fuel standards. Lots of them. and the consequences of not running say USA ULSD depends on what you mean by modern. The liquid-piston engine can switch fuels easily. Your 2022 Chevy, probably not without reprogramming the ECU. As far as old school diesel engines, we've been running them for literally millions of miles (beyond the expected life of any modern vehicle) on waste veg oil, used motor oil, and all kinds of other liquid fuels. While you may have a degree, how many diesel engines have you ran at length on alternative fuels?

  1. how many days of diesel is the country supposed to have on hand?
  2. diesel is renewable and manufacturable. anyone can make diesel pretty easily (not easy to fill semi trucks without some industrialization ((permits)))
  3. According to people who operate truck stops, in the past couple years rail companies have capped cross country diesel shipments at levels lower than in previous years. Also, truck drivers are also getting harder to find.
  4. Tesla semi : diesel :: Baltic Pipeline : Nordstream ?

Dems pushing refineries to pump out gasoline over diesel to lower the price at the pump until the elections?

Diesel is a minority byproduct of oil processing. If diesel shortages exist petrol shortages are not far behind. You can't make gas without making diesel earlier in the process.
