Ripoff. Save the money to pay for future repairs. Insurance is paying because you didn't save your money. You should never buy insurance unless you can't afford the bill yourself, and your goal should be to save up until you can, and then cancel the insurance. If you own a car that you can't afford the repairs on, you should sell the car and buy something cheaper. The only things you should pay insurance for are potentially health insurance, life insurance for your family in case you are the breadwinner and die, and home/car insurance that you are legally required to carry.

Car insurance is required in my state, and on top of that they’ve raised the rates annually so it’s super expensive.

Yep. Banks require it to protect their investment. Don't know how long that's been going on, but everyone I know has it.
