I was doing apartment maintenance, 19-20 years old at the time. Kind of a sweet gig at that age as I got a free place to live on top of wages. Went in one morning and the office wasn't open yet. Went to the back of the property to clean out and organize a storage unit that had been in disarray since I started. Went back to the office around lunch time and got berated by the apartment manager for being late. My explanation of how I showed up early and what I'd been doing all morning fell on deaf ears and she fired me then and there. She didn't even want to see what I'd accomplished that morning. Confusion as to what just happened on my part.

Turned out, the daughter and boyfriend who lived with her had gotten engaged. Guess who immediately took over as the maintenance guy on the property before I moved out. Yeah, the fiance. In retrospect, happy that it happened. It set a new path for me that ultimately led me to greater success than if I'd been complacent and working that job for years.

I learned pretty early on in life that setbacks, be it in work or relationships, are simply part of the journey to happiness, with lessons learned along the way. Without getting fucked over, repeatedly it seemed at times, I would not be where I am today.
