I'm pushing half a century soon and i'd like to do some more international travel. i used to rent a car and sleep in the back when i traveled previously, but that can make for some uncomfortable evenings. so for the bucks and does on here who don't want to spend $300 a night on a fine star hotel, let alone even 100, how do hostels work for middle-aged people? is it even a thing?

If you choose to go the youth hostel route, the Hostelling International (HI) (hihostels.com) hostels offer marginally safer accommodations than non-affiliated hostels.

Otherwise, an organization originally called ElderHostel, now renamed Road Scholar (roadscholar.org), offers rooms and learning experiences for more mature travelers.

But always check the recent online reviews prior to making any reservations.
