Body on frame is a good choice. 4Runner is one of the only options. Get a 4Runner.
I got the GX Lexus because I needed more tax deductions, its basically the same thing as the 4runner but nicer. As soon as the guy told me it was built on the Tundra Chassis I bought it. The Tundra was the best truck I've ever owned.

Went with the 4runner b/c I'm poorer. They're built side by side in the same factory. :)

Get the V8 one. Did some research and pretty gets the same gas mileage as the V6.
They haven't made a v8 version in 13 years. Yes they're still good but if you want a later model you'll get a perfectly fine v6.
I drove one. Sluggish as hell, which is my only complaint.
It's not made or geared for hot rodding. 2 things about "sluggishness." 1. ECT POWER. Hit that button, it changes the shift points for more aggressive response. 2. VVT-i. Variable valve timing with intelligence. This controls air flow in to the engine. Air flow is restricted with flimsy pedal presses. It takes a harder pedal press to activate the correct valve timing. It wasn't the truck. Vvt is there to make the truck more fuel efficient. It was your foot not pressing the pedal hard enough.
I'm not a hot rodder, I'm an old fart who drives conservatively. I have a full sized van with a small 6 cylinder engine that can beat the shit out of a 4runner off the line. But when I test drove it, I was just driving normally, and noticed it was sluggish. If I get around to trying one out again I will try your suggestions because other than the weak pedal response, I like the vehicle.
