Never seen such a thing. Going to need some evidence to show this is actually happening.

There's a couple streets around my town that kind of look like they have black lights, They're not anything like the ones people have at home they're just more of a purple tint.

There are a few in my area.

Anecdotal evidence is not real proof. Besides, we already know the cause and it's not sinister. White LEDs are actually blue LEDs with a phosphor coating that makes them shone White. The phosphor coating is failing and more blue/near UV light is coming out instead of the White light from the phosphor. They're just low quality LEDs that are going bad.

Here's your answer. White LEDs are actually made from blue LEDs and use a phosphor coating to change the blue/near UV light into White light. The street lights are changing color because the phosphor that makes them White is failing or coming off thereby emitting more blue light from the raw LED die. These badly made LEDs are degrading over time and changing color output. There's nothing sinister about them other than the waste of you local tax dollars on dodgy LED street lights.

had it covered on the answer. I'd still like to know who the manufacturer is so I can stay clear of. I need to replace a pole light and would like to go LED.

Just get a light that uses emitters from manufacturer of quality emitters and is not made in China unless under the supervision of an American, European, or Japanese company.

There are literally hundreds of manufacturers of commercial LED lighting, so chances are if you just throw the terms you want into search and look at images, you'll find something you like.

For the ones in question, you could just ask the municipality if they can tell you who made them. Say something like you have a commercial jobber that's inquired because they want to use similar.

Thanks for the links. I couldn't find a single source in stating who the manufacturer of the LEDs was.

Blacklight is UV-A, and doesn't have much use other that detection of things like blood and making posters glow (and non-destructive testing to look at things like weld penetration and cracks in metal.) While it's pretty harmless in short exposures, long-term can cause cancers. It's just slightly above violet in the spectrum, so you see a little bit of dull purple glow. There's not enough visible light to be of any use as an illumination device.

Chances are what you are experiencing is people misunderstanding the LED lights that are replacing Mercury Vapor and HIgh-Pressure Sodium lamps. White LEDs work by exposing a phosphor to a blue LED die, giving you white light. Some lamps are cold white, and have a bluish-purple glow similar to what you'd see from a blacklight.

Non destructive testing uses UV

Yes, you are right. I've never dealt much with that end of equipment, it escaped me.

On a side note I've seen a few LED street lamps and lighting already give out or flicker.

IMO sodium is still superior. Much easier on the eyes and the bulbs can actually last for a pretty long time.

Yes. LEDs have infant mortality problems. I've seen mercury vapor lamps on for so long they're green and you can hear the plates in the starter transformer chattering.

It's possible that it's to help detect who has and hasn't taken the Jim Jones juice 1&2 and the juice booster 1,2,3....

If I'm not mistaken luciferase is in those things.

I have done fair amount or traveling in the last few years. Having seen these lights quite frequently, I absolutely do not buy that all of these are all malfunctioning bulbs. I have noticed a pattern in their placement along major freeway interchanges. You will usually see one or two on the entrance and exit ramps. They always seem to be on public property near locations where many people might pass by or congregate.

The new purple / blueish hue to street lights is awful. It make it impossible to see the white / yellow lane lines on the road.

That does sound like a valid complaint for the department of transportation
