Exactly. The wildlife pay with having to fight or flee. Hunt or graze. They pay too but in a different way. Domesticated cattle pay as live stock. Pets pay to live in the home, just essentially zero freedom I guess.
Also because humans are really, really fucking demanding beings (and rightfully so, since they have so much potential).
Homeless aren't supposed to be in our cites, that's why vagracy was a crime. You be a bum around here, you get the fuck out. Whatever street the bum is shitting up has someone's home, business or whatever there.

i would hardly call being a bum a functional member of society.

You can argue they do have a function. They're reminding everyone of the failure that society has become to cause an individual to live this way.
