Fumduck covered the topic fairly well. I grew up an hour south of Los Angeles. It used to be great living here. Not so much now. High crime, drugs, homeless derelicts crapping on sidewalks, high taxes, etc. Go outside the cities and you can basically live how you like. I love hiking and exploring the desert areas.
