lots of open desert to go camp in and stare. a small refractor will get you far here. not to mention good observatories in the AZ if you want to get that far south. Good groups (as in knowledgeable) in the area, keep an eye out for the leftists intrusion last couple years.

depending on how frontier you want to get. you can get pretty close. large hunks (50ish acres) of desert are available for not too expensive... good luck with the well you'll need to survive, you can spend as much as you spent on the land to get one.

Fumduck covered the topic fairly well. I grew up an hour south of Los Angeles. It used to be great living here. Not so much now. High crime, drugs, homeless derelicts crapping on sidewalks, high taxes, etc.

Go outside the cities and you can basically live how you like. I love hiking and exploring the desert areas.
