I been listening to several lately and Layne Staley is by far the best. Several songs here so skip around. I lost the link to the one that really impressed me. Its really surprising when you listen to only vocals from bands.

For females, Karen Carpenter has to be close to the top.

I agree. Beautiful lilting voice AND a hell of a drummer in the Krupa style

Have you listened to isolated vocals? Its different sounding without music, if so post a link.

I based my comment off of these analyses:

What an incredible voice.

A vocalist without music is just a poet talking real weird.

You drifted a bit soon

I don't know why, but it got me laughing pretty hard. Especially the "twist, twist" part.

Best lyrics ever! Lol twist twist

Alice in Chains is one of my favorite bands.

This is a compilation of Layne vocals only

Nutshell is probably my favorite of the ones available. https://youtu.be/noATBGkwGEM?t=2236

It didn't ask for a link the question was who do I think is the best vocalist without music so I answered. I DO however appreciate you doing so.

Its dif without music, if we dont hear its irrelevant. It does say vocal only.

For sweetness, Carl Wilson https://www.yewtu.be/watch?v=_pO1xeRh0Ro

An absolute degen, but masterful: https://www.yewtu.be/watch?v=rSvpdej2OlA

For power, Pavarotti. ...or that Gucci gang guy.

See now thats what I mean, its totally different.

I haven't looked into it lately, but there's free and paid software like 'spleeter' and a couple of others that let you split almost any music into different channels like guitar/bass/vocals/percussion, etc. Some of it's gotten a lot better than the way they did it even 5 years ago, where if you didn't have the masters, all you could really do is try and filter stuff out using EQing.

I always liked Mike Patton.

Me, too. His voice is so distinctive.
