Depends on the stakes. Is it a couple hundred dollars over a traffic ticket, or is it a 6 figure lawsuit based on a lie?
I've been in both situations.
With the tickets, I proved my guilt to be mathematically impossible, I won. The judge found my presentation very interesting as well as irrefutable. The risk with losing was only a few hundred dollars.
As for the law suit. Within a month of talking to the lawyer the case was dropped. He ended up working it out with the other parties lawyer without me even seeing a court house.
Here's the real reason, all of these lawyers and judges are basically coworkers, they all know each other and how they work. You can't research or learn that.
