It just depends on if he is planning on using wood for a fire. You can't actually just chop down a tree into logs and burn it efficiently, fresh wood is pretty wet, that is why it needs to be seasoned by storing it in as dry a place as you can for a long period of time. Fall wood burns well because it has been dead for a prolonged period of time, so long that it as actually fallen of the tree, so it is somewhat dessicated already.
If you don't think your gonna have a bunch of cooking fuel, Oats are the move because you can just rehydrate them and eat them without cooking. Rice would be better if you are confident in your supply of cooking fuel.
