If you're lazy go with mountain house, it tastes alright and works great for backpacking. Best bet is learn food preservation in the absence of refrigeration.

Mountainhouse is good but expensive. It’s like eight or nine dollars a meal now. Would like to know how to make something like that for cheaper. I’m assuming it’s just dehydrated meals but wonder if there’s more to it

Freeze dried and sealed with an O2 absorber.

We garden and jar and have seeds , we keep chickens . Have a bunch MREs , but want to hear a concensus on the best tasting storable food brand . Moumtain Horse you say ?

Food that needs heated or water is an issue in a true emergency. I recommend canning meat. You can’t get far without meat and fat, amd the price per calorie on the premise stuff is astronomical. Also salt. That and a big bag of rice, a propane tank you can get a couple months if you have water. All the canned stuff has plastic lined cans, I wouldn’t suggest it.

Close enough, I keep a few in my camping pack. They're pretty expensive for what they are but I like how light they pack plus they'll fill you up for awhile.

I not bugging out or camping . I'm hunkering down .

Any thoughts on "My Patriot Supply" tubs ?

Most any freeze dried and vacuum packed or nitrogen packed foods will last for several decades as long as they are not subjected to extremes of heat or cold. Store them in a cellar or basement raised off of the floor like on a pallet or similar. If you can keep them dry and without wild swings in temps you'll be golden.

I had a can of red wheat berries from 1973 given to me that I thought was iffy as it was 2018, so I tossed the contents outside. About 1/3 of it grew! The can said they were just nitrogen packed.

I have a bunch of freeze dried items stored in my pantry. I'll get the brand for you later, but honestly I haven't eaten a bit of it yet so I don't know if it will taste worth a damn or how long this particular brand will actually last. Most items I bought say between 20 to 30 years.

Go to Costco and get whatever they have on hand. You can also order from them online.

I just received, today, a years supply of food (and coffee) from My Patriot Supply, check back with me in a few years...

I made my food storage. I went to a restaurant supply place and got 50lbs of wheat bulgar, 50lbs of Chick Peas, 50lbs of rice and 10lbs of salt. Just mylar bagged them up with a hair straightener and put them in rubber tubs. Should last at least 20 years and the whole kit set me back like 500 bucks including the tubs and bags. It's something like 40 days worth of food for my a family of 5.

Mylar Bags, dry beans from Costco, dry rice from Costco, chili, spam. I picked up a bunch of these instead of the emergency buckets which many were full of carbs.

if you're not bagging rice and beans yourself, I can't stress hard enough to not stack food stored in mylar bags. go with the #10 cans. the cans will actually last 20 years. the cheap mylar bags that most companies use don't usually last very long.

that said, if you're bagging yourself, there are quality heat sealed bags that will last, and you can buy a lot of rice for 100 bucks.

Bagging your own beans and rice isn't hard. Add some diatomaceous earth, and an O2 absorber and you're good to go. I'm filling up the space under all the beds frames quickly...

Are you operating under the assumption you will have access to fresh water or that you will not have access to fresh water?
