Loser mentality. I assume without friends. Pay too much for drinks to be around drunk people who are dumb enough to pay too much for drinks. Then, when drunk, get into your vehicle to drive home.

I'm making the distinction between bars and dance halls.

If you have friends, either go to their place or have them over. Then you have an excuse to take pride in where and how you live. You save money on drinks and can afford to spend more on quality food with quality friends.

I wasn't much of a bar person either. But I would force myself to go because that's what you did. I'm not exactly that social so most of the time I would just do a constant figure 8 in the bar until it was time to Irish exit my ass home. I just never enjoyed shouting into someone's ear to try to have a semi uninteresting conversation. Sometimes I go for music but even that got stale after a while.

I’ve tried a couple times since my 20s, mostly stopping in after my shift. Shoot the shit with strangers, give the strippers a few hard earned dollars… fuckin music sucks though.

Bars offer many forms of entertainment. I find the ones with great cocktails and bartenders and food. Better than sitting alone at a table. I actually read books and people watch most of the time.

The internet and social media is a relatively new creation. Therefore once you were home you would have little opportunity to socialize. So you would go to a bar instead and have some good conversation before then going home.

People go to bars for many reasons, but people do not go to bars to drink.

If you wanted to drink, you could buy some booze at a liquor store and drink in the comfort of your own home, for much cheaper. You could go drink in a public park, or on the platform of a subway in any major metropolitan area in the United States. Nobody will stop you. I do it all the time.

People drink at the bar because perhaps they want to meet a girl. Or perhaps they want to make new friends. Maybe they know the bartender on shift, and treat him as a therapist.

Or maybe they drink at bars simply because they do not want to be home. When I was bartending I had many customers like this. Abusive spouses, shitty roommates, I accidentally locked myself out and nowhere else is open at 1:30 so I need a place to sit while I frantically call friends to see if they will let me crash on their couch.

There are tons of reasons to go to bars, but drinking is simply not one of them.

I never liked bars either. I don't drink for the most part. Sure, there are women there but, they are drunks.

Not only that, but it's a good place to get into a fight. It never fails. Every time a friend talks me into going, there is some fuck face looking to pick a fight.
