All current medical advancements are based off of pharmaceuticals, since that is where the majority of academic funding is derived.
Chronic syndromes and autoimmune diseases are the best profit drivers, so I suspect any advancements to be in this area. Anything where you can have a patient that is constantly unwell, but taking a daily pill on patent will keep them just healthy enough to keep paying.
It makes me wonder if there is much incentive (and the associated funding) to actually pursue advanced understanding of human physiology, diseases, etc.
