I was ripping out the cabinetry and soffit above the sink and I realized I totally and completely do not like cabinets. They take up a ton of space and make the place feel claustrophobic.

They also cut into the airspace in your work space. Atleast when the counter is too shallow and cabinet too deep.

Made me think, what heck else would I really have my way if I just didn’t care.

So far I’ve gotten rid almost all superfluous furniture, the place is basically empty. It has a kind of just moved in feeling to it. Space to think and breathe.

Put in sliding doors with three changes that actually make them end up being better than normal doors, kind of by far. Auto close / open auto latches. Door is alway 3/4” out so it can be grabbed easy. Extra embedded drawer latch added for easy closing. Three non traditional changes I’ve never seen anyone else do because fuck it I don’t care the idea sounds great and it works and I can do whatever I want because I install it myself.

And the changes are awesome and anyone would agree they’d be standard if they saw them themselves.

I hang my clothes on clothes hangers in a closet. There are closets in every fucking room of my house. So many closets there isn't enough room for superfluous furniture. And way too many closets for the amount of clothing I need to store.

I put a dresser in the closet. Now you have to open the doors to get to the drawers. Which contain my drawers.

There's a lot to be said for blank wall space in a house. You can put what you want against it, and move it if you don't like it there. When you have built-ins everywhere, there is no fucking place to put anything. I know, because I live in a house in which the previous owner decided he was going to build in shit everywhere, and put in dozens of large windows for passive solar heating. As a result, I have almost no wall space.

All our dressers are in the closets too leaves a lot of space in the bedrooms which we need because of all these kids.

Yours actually make it that far?

Neither. I keep them in the closet. One can even get vertical shelving boxes with hangers in the top. As long as the rod that is taking all this weight is well supported, this works well. And has room underneath for laundry baskets.

Shirts get hung up. Pants on the shelf socks, undies and white tees in the drawer

It sounds like you’re putting your clothes in the kitchen cabinets… that’s where the food goes. The doors are generally used to keep things out, such as kitchen grime and pests. It’s a similar concept with clothing storage. Were I a mouse, I’d love it if you left your wardrobe open.
