We have an ac unit outside, looks like this

https://gshaservices.com/product/comfort-13-carrier-air-conditioner/

So the idiots that put our siding on punctured the coolant line, and we ran it for a few days it was blowing kind of cold air but it never actually cooled upstairs. This was for about a week. Then we have them fix it, but it turns out it was still leaking because they came in again and they had to refill the unit again with R134 or whatever. It ran leaking again for another month. Our power bills went from 380kw to 1600kw for one month

Question is, how much damage is done to the unit running it with no coolant or to the point where it doesn't actually turn off?

I do some work on our truck a/cs and I installed my own mini split unit in my house. I pressure them up with nitrogen first and leave it for a few hours and if it does leak down you can buy leak detection fluid, which is basically soap but is suppose to be safe for copper lines, then after that test passes I vacuum and let that sit for awhile.
