We have an ac unit outside, looks like this

https://gshaservices.com/product/comfort-13-carrier-air-conditioner/

So the idiots that put our siding on punctured the coolant line, and we ran it for a few days it was blowing kind of cold air but it never actually cooled upstairs. This was for about a week. Then we have them fix it, but it turns out it was still leaking because they came in again and they had to refill the unit again with R134 or whatever. It ran leaking again for another month. Our power bills went from 380kw to 1600kw for one month

Question is, how much damage is done to the unit running it with no coolant or to the point where it doesn't actually turn off?

You can burn out the compressor only because there is some lubricant in the R134 that will coat the seals of the compressor so they don't dry out. But you'd need to run it for like an entire season dry so you're probably in the clear.

Running without (enough) coolant shouldn't damage an A/C, it just doesn't cool effectively anymore, as you see in your power bill. Seems to be a small leak and after a refill of coolant it works and then slowly the coolant vanishes.

Get them to run new tubing from the compressor to the condenser. It'll be a few hundred dollars for the line set, but cheaper than them continuing to come out and re-fixing the line and refill the coolant. They might be able to get $20-30 though for the copper in the old line.

the compressor is in the condenser, you want them to re-run 8 inches of copper?

I meant to say the evaporator and condenser or compressor. Whichever line (high or low pressure) is leaking.

Running low coolant will freeze (like ice like old school freezers) on a-coils in your house blocking air flow and creating a mess.

Because not enough pressure in line to circulate and when fan goes humidity will freeze on them

Compressor should be because if get lows there is switching to turn off to prevent damage.

Bitch at the siding people and get it professionally repaired and recharge system. The line is probably okay if like a pinhole they could probably just solder it closed.

Make sure evac the system and vaccumm the atmosphere out, recharge.

Hi. Engineer here. It's a reverse brayton power cycle.

So the idiots that put our siding on punctured the coolant line, and we ran it for a few days it was blowing kind of cold air but it never actually cooled upstairs. This was for about a week. Then we have them fix it,

WHO fixed it? an AC guy or the siding people? Did he cut a hole in your wall? if not he probably didn't fix it.

but it turns out it was still leaking because they came in again and they had to refill the unit again

ya they probably didn't fix it, bet they put in leak-stop and hoped for the best.

with R134 or whatever.

its not 134a, its 410a IF they put in anything else that could be an issue.

It ran leaking again for another month. Our power bills went from 380kw to 1600kw for one month.

That's because your compressor is running with low/no pressure and since the unit is never satisfying the thermostat its never shutting off

Question is, how much damage is done to the unit running it with no coolant or to the point where it doesn't actually turn off?

If its been running for a couple months low/no pressure? and constantly? probably a lot. You need some one to come and fix it. If it was me I'de tell the siding company they are responsible, and that they can pay the bill the ac guy gives you or they can send an Ac guy out, but if all they sent out was a bunch of spics to do your siding they are just gonna send out some dumbass spic to look at it, so get your own guy, ask on facebook, you want a guy who is in business for himself, NOT some one who is running radio ads and commercials and has 10 trucks on the road.

It is a new home build and our warranty is until this December. They should replace the ac unit then, right? It ran pretty much from end of June to mid August, and it was 95-105 every day till 10pm-12am

They pulled a tiny bit of the siding off and I saw where the nail punctured the line, but it looks like there's another hole or two.

We had our 15yo outside unit replaced last month. After they connected the new one to the copper tubing the connected a vacuum with gauges to the lines, pulled it down to a vacuum and let it sit for 30 minutes to make sure the vacuum held without the gauge dropping before they added refrigerant.

So the guy that did the first repair didn't check for vacuum, right?

they aren't going to replace the unit, as long as the compressor is running they wont even replace that despite them probably shaving a few years off its life. Just taking the siding off did fuck all you probably need a new line set. with it being a new install its possible their are other leaks that are not caused by the siding morons. stop getting the cheapest work done, you get what you pay for.

stop getting the cheapest work done, you get what you pay for.

What the fuck are you talking about, idiot?

ACs need to be PURGED of the old coolant, then refilled.

forgot to mention, this is a new house and new build. The ac is only 9 months old.

You said the line got punctured, that introduces air. Purge the existing fluid along with the air, a special pump is needed for this. Simply adding freon will not fix it, if there is air in the system.
