Anyone has the potential to break your heart. It's easier to develop closer friendships that feel more like family than the family you were born with, but it's mostly an illusion. Try to live with one of your best, most trusted mates for a few months/years, see how much of a "bro" thing you got going, shouldn't take long to make or break it.
Family is a deeper bond than friendship. It's a duty to each other, or it was, we in the west don't have family values being promoted and enjoyed these days, quite the opposite in fact. Tradition is a dirty word because it brings up all those devastating historical offences like gays not being allowed to marry and whores having to keep their legs closed until they could marry.
Speaking as a single dad of a teenager I can admit with some shame that if I knew just how screwed my/future generations were I might not have had kids at all with anyone, ever.
